How to Add Personality to a Fibreglass Shower Surround
The fibreglass shower surround; the ‘go-to’ affordable choice for new homes, renovations and bathroom remodels. And while it has been kickin’ it in the loo for many decades – it definitely has NOT won any design awards in that time.
Why is it so popular? Well, it’s affordable, fresh and sanitary looking and easy to clean (compared to grout). o what’s the problem? Regardless of the model you buy, it is considered ‘builder basic’ in the decorating world and usually needs other decorative items in the room to compensate for the fact that it has NO personality.
So, what do you do? You add tile above and/or around your fibreglass surround. That’s right. Rather than having plain old drywall surrounding your plain old fibreglass, choose a tile that complements your bathroom countertop and flooring.
Why is this whole tile idea so awesome?
- It’s affordable. Because the square footage is at a minimum, the product/install will be as well
- HUGE bang for buck visually
- It gives the bathroom personality
- It’s a great visual connection to the other solid surfaces in the bathroom
Also, aside from adding some interest to your boring old fibreglass surround, if you have a bathroom layout that allows you to see the shower/tub area from the doorway, it will look like the entire shower area is tiled when you have the shower curtain closed.
So there you have it, my friends – some ideas to update your fibreglass surround that you thought would NEVER look good.

I like the colors of the bathroom. I am looking to replace my tub and surround due to it cost. Just need something to make it look better and you did an awesome job. Can you please provide the colors of the tile, floor and cabinet?
